Vegetarian diet for gout – FAIL!

I became a vegetarian (almost vegan). I gave up meat altogether and took various drugs prescribed by my attending physician, including steroids. It was all to no avail. There are many vegetarians who develop gout and fail to heal; meaning that exclusion of meat from the menu is not generally valid. If the accumulation of purines in the body is the cause of gout, I had to figure out how to avoid it.

Prescribed medication for gout – did not help!

The problem for those suffering from gout is that the moment you stop the drugs – the attacks are coming back very quickly. Modern medicine doesn’t seek the essence of the problem, but only treats the symptoms. For traditional medicine the causes of gout are not known. At least I’m not familiar with this information, despite lengthy research on my part. These facts bowed me to believe that you have to think in an unconventional way. In the following lines will describe all the treatments for gout, other than pharmaceutical products and will share how they helped me.

Baking soda as a method of treating gout?

At the beginning of my research I came across a website where someone who has the same problem tells how baking soda can be used in the treatment of gout, adding a quarter teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water, 2 to 4 times a day. I must admit that it helped, but it is very likely that this method was the reason to drink medicines for blood pressure, which is not good. Furthermore, baking soda does not eradicate gout, it only relieves the symptoms.

This method can be effective in your case, but first consult with your doctor, especially if you have blood pressure problems.

Apple cider vinegar has helped me a little in seeking treatment for gout.

Then I read about apple cider vinegar, which is known for its ability to relieve pain in the joints. You need to use organic vinegar and drink 2 teaspoons dissolved in a glass of water in the morning.

I highly recommend it to people with various forms of arthritis. It helps to relieve the pain, but again, it is not a cure.

Curing gout with freshly squeezed juices – Failed.

Before beginning the treatment with juices I consulted the doctor which was treating me and he considered the idea to be great, assuming pretty good results. I was loaded with alkaline water from which I tried to drink 3 to 6 cups a day plus 3 to 6 cups of freshly squeezed juices to balance the PH of the blood. I did regular checks, but the levels did not change for three months and I quitted. I think the reason is the irregularity and my negative attitude, but drinking these juices can really work. I made one more mistake which you will read below.

The conversations with my doctor about the gout

After three months, in which nothing had changed, I decided to talk to my doctor about the influence of the PH levels on the body and the accumulation of purines in the blood. According to him, foods have little impact on the levels of purines in the blood. However, he said that I should try to drink greater amounts of alkaline water and consume a lot of green vegetables and limit the sugar intake. He recommended Mediterranean diet, which I tried, but my gout was not affected.

My research continued and eventually I came across some research that indicated that sugar may be one cause of gout. When we eat sugar, it accumulates in our body and leads to insulin resistance, causing diabetes, affecting the liver and many other functions in the body, which prevents the body to regenerate and balance itself.

Strikingly, the increase in sugar consumption in the United States over the last century coincides with the increase in the percentage of people suffering from “disease of kings”, as well as other illnesses associated with the acidic environment in the body. Carbohydrates (bread, potatoes, pasta, etc.) affect the body the same way and their intake should be limited.

As a result of this information, restrict your intake of carbohydrates to about 75 to 125 grams per day and start enjoying your favorite meat, tuna, eggs and other high protein foods. I’m sure that if you follow such a regime you will notice a change in your condition.

I’m no doctor, but I’m a man who was stuck with gout for many years. Reducing sugar, fructose, glucose and any form of sugar to less than 25 to 35 grams per day, and carbohydrates to less than 75 grams per day it will almost eliminate the attacks of the disease. I started taking ibuprofen and sodium, as well as other anti-inflammatory drugs when I felt the first signs and pain.

The change in my dietary regime led to a loss of about 50 pounds and the gout attacks decreased significantly and are now extremely rare. For over a year I have not had problems with gout. It is important to be careful with the weight loss, because the sudden weight loss may lead to accumulation of uric acid in the joints, which will aggravate the condition.

As I said above, drinking fresh juices can act to alleviate the condition. My mistake was that I made the juices with fruits which are high in sugar, and when juiced the sugar becomes more concentrated, which probably led to the problems. Therefore, if you use this method it is better to juice vegetables because they are low in carbohydrates or fruit with a little sugar.

My opinion is that sugar and carbohydrates are the main culprits for gout. Diet that limits them to a minimum and the elimination of processed and packaged foods from the diet will lead to improvement of the condition.

Currently my condition is better, even though I eat a lot of meat and vegetables. Daily I drink juices, mostly from leafy green vegetables, and plenty of water.

I read a story about a woman suffering from multiple health problems and about a year ago decided not to eat anything that could not buy in the 50s of the last century. This change has helped to solve many of her health problems. I noticed the same trend in my life.

If you have tried everything to improve the condition but don’t see the result, I recommend that you limit your intake of sugars and carbohydrates. Consult a physician before taking any cardinal changes in your diet and/or life.”
