Nutella is a real treat, there’s no doubt about it. It is one of the most popular products in USA and it can be found in many countries. Children and grownups love Nutella, but it is not as harmless as they would have us believe. In reality, it has a dark and sinister side.
According to the official website of Nutella in the United States, Nutella contains: sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, whey powder (milk), soy lecithin as an emulsifier and vanillin (artificial flavoring). Although most people are aware that these ingredients are harmful, Nutella always claims that its products contain no artificial colors or artificial preservatives.
Here are four alarming ingredients you should consider:
- Whey Powder
Whey protein is a natural residual product in the production of cheese. It usually comes from cows fed with GMOs, antibiotics and other hormones. Whey powder is just a preservative that prevents lumps in the product, but it’s manufactured in some unhealthy agricultural practices.
- Soy lecithin
Soy lecithin is a byproduct that remains when soybean oil goes through what is called a “degumming process”. This sludge contains various pesticides and solvents. It is mainly used as an emulsifier to prevent water and fat from separating in common foods, such as peanut butter, margarine and ice cream. It becomes dangerous because 90% of soy is not grown organically and this can lead to immunological problems and allergies.
- Palm oil
Palm oil is mostly included in candies. It poses a number of problems, both in terms of the environment to your health as well. Palm oil increases the cholesterol levels in the blood and is one of the main causes of deforestation in Southeast Asia.
Vanillin is not equivalent to vanilla, because vanillin just has the smell and taste of vanilla. This is a chemical that is cheaper than real vanilla, nothing more. Most times, it’s simply monosodium glutamate (MSG) with sodium and water. In the body, the MSG is a excitotoxin, which makes our brain believe that Nutella is better than it actually is. Wicked.
It is also responsible for a number of neurological problems like Parkinson’s disease, olivopontocerebellar degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease and ALS.
