We all use several tricks to give a pleasant smell to our homes. However, some contain compounds that can be a serious health hazard. Here’s an easy trick to give a nice smell to your home.
Scented candles: do they present health hazard?
According to a study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), 40% of the market candles contain toxic wick in scented candles. These contain lead, which would strengthen the wick because it tends to soften due scented oils.
In addition, the researchers also noted that this wick would release 5 times more lead than average. This exposure can cause hormonal disorders, behavioral disorders and other health problems.
To use natural substances instead of commercial scented candles, you need to follow two essential steps:
Take a jar of already used scented candle container and fill a quarter of it with baking soda. Then choose an essential oil of your choice (lavender, lemon …) and add 8 to 10 drops.
Using a fork, mix well the two ingredients so the essential oil can be integrated into the baking soda, you will immediately feel the smell.
Warning: avoid contact with the skin as this can cause redness, irritation of the skin or slight irritation of the respiratory tract if inhaled.
The second step is to prepare the candle, and you will need the following:
– A cotton wick
– Round silicone mold
– Aluminum foil
– A pedestal
To begin, melt the wax in a double boiler. Then dip the wick into the wax for two minutes and wrap it in aluminum foil so that it adopts an upright position and let it cool in the freezer.
After a few minutes, take out the wick that should be well frozen and standing upright. Take a pedestal and place the wick through the hole in it.
Put the pedestal in the bottom of the small candle mold or round silicone mold (which must be smaller than the glass candle container that contains baking soda) pour the wax and let it cool for a few minutes until it hardens.
Preparation of the scented candle
Finally, put the little candle mold over the baking soda which is in the jar of scented candle container. You can flip it and the perfume coming from the essential oil that you used will invade the room.
In addition, here is an easy homemade aromatic spray:
– 1 cup of water
– 30 drops of lemon essential oil
In a spray bottle, mix the two ingredients and your homemade aromatic spray is ready!
Lemon essential oil has antibacterial and antiseptic properties that will capture odors, disinfect the air and provide a feeling of freshness.
