According to the authoritative agency of food and drug, known as FDA, claim that walnuts should be subjected to a drug specialized screening process before being released on the market. It is really unbelievable, the walnuts that we consume every day to be considered as illegal drugs.
A food company, called Diamond Foods, established in 1912, by a small group of Californian walnut farmers have been extremely affected by this proposed mandate. The only thing that this company proposed to the consumers was to consume walnuts on regular basis; having in mind the fact that walnuts have numerous health benefits, such as, maintenance of our blood, kidneys, liver, brain, and many more.
Nonetheless, FDA strongly objected to Diamond Foods for promoting use of walnuts on daily basis, sending to them quite aggressive and personal letter, quoting:
“Your walnut products are drugs…they may not legally be marketed in the United States without an approved new drug application.”
This food company promoted walnuts as a valuable source of omega-3 fatty acids, which is true. Likewise, Diamond Foods stated that omega-3 fatty acids have numerous health benefits, such as, lowered risk of certain cancers and heart diseases. These facts have a scientific background presented in various articles and studies, many of which are even found in the US National Library of Medicine. So, everything that this company claimed is true, and even more scientifically proven, it is not like they are trying to introduce something untrue so that their products are being sold.
This country does not need bad classification on healthy foods as we all know that FDA approves products with bad rep specifically when prescribed drugs are concerned. Healthy foods cannot be put with the other bunch of drugs approved by FDA, when it is a common fact that healthy foods like natural, organic fruits and vegetables (including walnut) promote overall health. For sure, when consuming walnuts you don’t have the risk of ulcers or heart attacks which is not the case with other approved FDA “drugs”.
Diamond Food was banned to place their products on the market because FDA put a label on them as “misbranded”, even though they had scientific backup.
This fact should really concern us as FDA cannot be the final, and highest authority telling us what is and isn’t good for us, specifically when all of us even once in our lifetime have felt the bad side effects of some of their approved products.
