While its true white rice looks so much more delicious than brown rice, it doesn’t mean it’s the healthier alternative.
Probably most of you believe that white rice is harmful to your health.
White rice is the name given to milled rice that has had its husk, bran, and germ removed. This alters the flavor, texture and appearance of the rice and helps prevent spoilage and extend its storage life. After milling, the rice is polished, resulting in a seed with a bright, white, shiny appearance.
The International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition published a study which discovered that brown basmati rice actually elevated the levels of blood glucose more than white basmati rice.Basmati rice is a unique species of rice originating from India. Just like all species of rice, basmati is available in white or brown versions, depending on the extent of the milling process. Like jasmine rice, it has its own unique smell. In the case of basmati, this smell is due to the presence of a chemical called 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, which is found in basmati rice at about 90 parts per billion. That’s about 12 times more than in other types of rice, giving basmati its special aroma.
White rice in bags or boxes should be stored at room temperature, off the ground in a clean, cool and dry place. Once packaging has been opened, it should be resealed and stored properly until required. Alternatively, airtight containers may also be used to keep out dust, moisture and other contaminants. Always store rice at room temperature in a clean, cool dry place. Brown (husked) rice, however, cannot be stored for as long because the oil contained in the bran layer may become rancid.
Fragrant basmati rice is frequently used as the base for pilafs or paired with curries. Like all other types of rice, this long-grain Indian variety is available in both brown and white forms. Brown basmati rice retains its outer bran layer and typically contains more fiber and nutrients than white basmati rice, which has been milled and stripped of its bran.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that at least half of the grains you eat daily should be whole grains like brown rice.
Phytic acid, or phytate, is found in plant seeds. Phytic acid is also known as inositol hexaphosphate, or IP6. It is often used commercially as a preservative due to its antioxidant properties. Bottom Line: Phytic acid is found in plant seeds, where it serves as the main storage form of phosphorus.
This does not seriously threaten your life, but it has also been found that the consumption of high-phytate foods throughout the day may cause a mineral deficiency, as well as numerous symptoms which accompany it.
Rice is a low-fat complex carbohydrate that is quickly digested and rapidly made available to the muscles and other body systems and is therefore a perfect source of energy. As a complex carbohydrate, rice powers the body. Our muscles store complex carbohydrates to be released as energy when needed.
