Exercises to Relieve Sciatica and Low Back Pain

The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain—and possibly tingling, numbness, or weakness—that originate in the lower back and travel through the buttock and down the large sciatic nerve in the back of each leg.

In the vast majority of cases sciatica is caused by a slipped disc. A slipped disc occurs when one of the discs that sit between the bones of the spine (the vertebrae) is damaged and presses on the nerves.

Although the pain associated with sciatica can be severe, most cases resolve with non-operative treatments in a few weeks. People who have severe sciatica that’s associated with significant leg weakness or bowel or bladder changes might be candidates for surgery.

If you have back pain and suffer depression or anxiety you’re at even greater risk for opioid abuse and addiction.

Depression Combined with Back Pain Raises Risk of Drug Abuse

Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. To be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks.

Anxiety disorders are different, though. They can cause such distress that it interferes with your ability to lead a normal life.

This type of disorder is a serious mental illness. For people who have one, worry and fear are constant and overwhelming, and can be disabling. But with treatment, many people can manage those feelings and get back to a fulfilling life. Those patients usually feel:

  • 50 percent less improvement of their back pain
  • 75 percent more opioid abuse

According to the authors, this highlights the importance of identifying symptoms of depression prior to prescribing opioid painkillers for back pain, as the risks are so much greater in such instances, and the benefits more limited.

Common Back Pain Triggers

Back pain is a common problem that affects most people at some point in their life.

It may be triggered by bad posture while sitting or standing, bending awkwardly, or lifting incorrectly. It’s not generally caused by a serious condition.

Lower back pain can be caused by a variety of problems with any parts of the complex, interconnected network of spinal muscles, nerves, bones, discs or tendons in the lumbar spine.

Pain in the low back can be a result of conditions affecting the bony lumbar spine, discs between the vertebrae, ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves, muscles of the low back, internal organs of the pelvis and abdomen, and the skin covering the lumbar area.

What to Do When Back Pain Strikes

If you suffer from backaches and notice reduced strength or muscle bulk in one or both legs, you should also get checked by a doctor.

These warning signs indicate that damage in the spine may be causing compression of the spinal cord and/or the nerves which branch out from it, and early treatment is essential if permanent damage is to be avoided.

The incidence of developing depression in addition to an anxiety disorder is high — almost half of all people with major depression also suffer from severe and persistent anxiety.

Addressing Sciatic Nerve Pain

Although the term sciatica means there is inflammation to the nerve, the most common cause of the inflammation is pressure and irritation as a result of disc degeneration and protrusion. Nerve Tumors can form in the peripheral nerve network anywhere in the body. These tumors often affect the function of the nerve, causing pain and disability. A large majority of peripheral nerve tumors are benign (not cancerous). Some are caused by neurofibromatosis, or schwannomatosis (genetic disorders of the nervous system).
