A conducted survey has confirmed that over 3,200 Americans under the age of 18 smoke their first cigarette every day. What is a terrifying fact is that most of them have no idea what smoking can bring to their health. Namely this nasty habit can lead to stroke, heart disease, lung diseases, diabetes, and certain kinds of cancer.
Statistics reveal that 480,000 deaths each year in the United States are caused by cigarette smoking due to the dangerous ingredients contained in them. Not many people know that an average cigarette contains over 600 different ingredients, and this is not all, also over 7,000 chemicals produced by cigarette smoke. Therefore, this fact should shock some of the existing smokers which may lead to quitting once for all.
Here it is what experts say regarding this issue:
Dr. Luz Claudio, anenvironmental health scientist with Mount Sinai School of Medicinewrites to Medical Daily:“One of the issues with cigarettes is that they have hundreds of added ingredients, not just what is naturally in the tobacco plant. What complicates this even more is that when these chemicals burn, they form other chemicals that may have additional effects on health.”
Dr. Brian Tiep,a pulmonologist specialized in pulmonary rehab with City of Hope told Medical Daily, quoting:“Cigarette smoke can affect the flow of oxygen within our bodies in two ways. First, carbon monoxide grabs on to the hemoglobin molecule, which prevents the transport of oxygen through red blood cells. Secondly, cyanide hinders tissue’s ability to take up and utilize oxygen. Tissue cannot function without this steady flow of oxygen.”
On the other hand, tobacco companies such as R.J. Reynolds claims that ingredients-incorporated in the cigarette are same in some food products and beverages which are approved by the Food and Drug Administration, for instance, the inorganic substance arsenic, traced in wood preservatives and rat poison. On the FDA’s Established List of Harmful and Potentially Harmful Constituents in Tobacco Products and Tobacco Smoke, arsenic may cause: cancer, cardiovascular, reproductive or developmental issues.
Carbon monoxide is more familiar chemical which can be found in car exhaust fumes, nicotine, and as well as found in insecticides. Formaldehyde is another cancer causing ingredient of embalming fluid. There are also others like: cadmium, an active ingredient in batteries, or hexamine, sometimes found in barbecue lighters. All 70 chemicals and ingredients traced in a cigarette are carcinogenic with a high potential of causing cancer, and unfortunately all these ingredients in some way can lead to death.
The American Cancer Society also confirms that 30% of cancer related deaths in U.S. are associated to cigarette smoking from which 87% of lung cancer deaths in men and 70% in women. Not to mention the fact that cigarette smoke may lead to other lung diseases such as: bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic airway obstruction. At the moment, 16 million Americans suffer from a disease caused by smoking. Therefore, a suitable prevention strategy has to be implemented so that young Americans realize how harmful and dangerous can cigarette smoking be as 5.4 million people under the age of 18 are at risk of losing their lives because of smoking-related illness. You must admit this is really scary.
