It is caused by accumulation of fluid in tissues. It can occur throughout the body (generalized), or a specific part or organ can be affected (localized).

Elevate your legs
Leg swelling caused by the retention of fluid in leg tissues is known as peripheral edema. It can be caused by a problem with the circulatory system, the lymphatic system or the kidneys. You may also experience swelling due to fluid buildup after sitting or standing for a long time. Just lift your legs or put a pillow underneath.
Compression stockings are made to help control swelling in the feet, ankles and lower legs. Benefits of compression stockings include helping to squeeze these areas to prevent the buildup of fluid in the tissue. This buildup of fluid can be very painful.
Monitor your salt intake
The foods that you eat have an impact on the chemicals in your body, especially your blood. Sometimes, if the amount of sodium in your blood becomes imbalanced, it can lead to swelling of parts of your body, particularly your feet. Excessive salt consumption can contribute to this problem, which may be relieved by cutting back on how much salt you consume in your diet.
Keep your exercises simple and remember not to overexert yourself. Try water workouts such as swimming, water walking, or water aerobics to reduce symptoms of edema. The force exerted by muscles against the pressure of water helps in moving the fluid buildup from tissues.
If you experience edema, drinking at least eight glasses of water per day can help reduce your symptom. When you drink more water, the kidneys notice the additional salt and water, sending a message to the body to release both.
