Swelling of your feet is just awful; we’ve all experienced it for one reason or another. Common causes are pregnancy, retention of salt, a long plane ride, or just being on our feet for too long. Swelling also occurs in relation to an injury; in addition to immediately raising your feet above your heart and applying cold gel packs, there are several home remedies that are very effective in making cold and elevation even more anti-inflammatory.
Green cabbage is the most cultivated and popular variety, more than the red or Savoy types. The red cabbage has been adopted by chefs worldwide as it adds a dash of color to salads and other dishes, while the Savoy is a favorite for slaw and salads. The flavour of cabbage varies as per the type, ranging from savory to gently sweet.
Not all home remedies for joint pain work; however, this does not stop people suffering from arthritis, gout and other types of joint pain from trying new things. Cabbage has been used as a folk remedy for hundreds of years to soothe painful joints. It is high in vitamins and phytonutrients as well as anthocyanins and glutamine, both containing anti-inflammatory properties, as reported in the NY Times Fitness and Nutrition section.

The standard treatment for gout involves anti-inflammatory drugs in combination with a diet low in purines, the chemical compounds that lead to crystals in and around joints to cause the agonizing pain associated with this condition. A study published in the June 2005 issue of “Arthritis & Rheumatism” found that 500 mg a day of vitamin C significantly lowered uric acid levels in 184 participants.
Raw red cabbage also has much more vitamin C than sweet, raw cherries (7mg) and sour raw cherries (10mg).
Flavonoids such as these are speculated to be the reason why cherries have lowered uric acid levels in two studies by inhibiting its production, but precisely which ones do this has not been publicly identified. Cherries have not reduced uric acid as much as gout medications such as allopurinol, febuxostat and probenecid.
Although people with gout should avoid proteins with very high purine concentrations such as organs, seafood and shellfish, and meats like venison, sausages and bacon, they can still eat proteins with lower purine content moderately.
