You know the seriousness of cancer. You know the toll it takes mentally, emotionally, financially, spiritually, and physically. It causes stress in your own mind and body as well as in your relationships with friends and family. It can make it hard to do the things you’ve always done as a human being, a parent, or an employee. We often hear people saying ‘oh, this food is carcinogenic’ and ‘eating this causes cancer’, but many of us don’t really know why this is.How does a food become carcinogenic? Does eating them definitely cause cancer? Should we avoid these things altogether?
Stop consuming these 8 Foods
- Avoid Farmed Salmon
Farm-raised fish may have as much as 20% less protein compared to wild fish. PCBs are cancer-causing chemicals that may exist in farm-raised salmon at a concentration 16 times higher than wild salmon, and the level of dioxin is also higher, by a factor of 11 fold. Four of the most hazardous – PCBs, dioxins, dieldrin and toxaphene – were used to calculate consumption safety guidelines.
The researchers recommended that only a half to one meal – defined as eight ounces of uncooked meat – of farmed salmon bought from supermarkets in London and Edinburgh should be eaten per month.
- Stay Clear Of Canned Tomatoes
The problem with canned tomatoes is the cansthemselves, which are lined with a resin that contains the synthetic estrogen bisphenol-A (BPA). A 2004 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found BPA present in the urine of 93% of those tested. Two-thirds of nearly 200 food cans analysed in the US study tested positive for the chemical, a finding described by the report’s authors as “alarming”. The investigation, commissioned by the US Breast Cancer Fund and other non-profit groups, found that leading canned food manufacturers were “not making good” on their promises to stop using BPA.
- Stay Off Soda Pop
A recent investigation by Consumer Reports found that many types of artificial caramel coloring, used in virtually every dark-colored soda, contain a potentially carcinogenic chemical called 4-methylimidazole (4-MeI). 4-MeI was found to causecancer in mice in 2007 and was declared a potential carcinogen in 2011.
- Stop Consuming Microwave Popcorn
While there’s no truth to the rumor that microwave popcorn contains chemicals proven to cause lung cancer, there is a chemical used in the nonstick coating on the inside of the popcorn bags that decomposes, producing a compound called perfluorooctanoic acid. This chemical has been associated with increased risk of certain cancers, including liver and prostate cancer.
- Careful With Those Potato Chips
According to the European Food Safety Authority, an: “Acrylamide is a chemical compound that typically forms in starchy food products during high-temperature cooking, including frying, baking and roasting.” This compound shows up in high amounts in popular plant-based foods such as coffee, coffee alternatives, French fries, potato chips (even if they are organic!) and crispy bread products… But unfortunately it doesn’t end there.
- Eating Highly Smoked, Pickled Or Salted Food Is Bad For You
Most of the salt we eat comes from packaged and take-away foods such as pizza, pies, sauces, condiments, seasonings, dressings, soups, margarines, bread and breakfast cereals. When shopping, read labels and choose products with less sodium. Some foods that are made salty should be used sparingly such as yeast extract spreads (e.g. Vegemite or Marmite), olives, cheese and anchovies.
- Genetically Modified Food
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are “organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in such a way that it does not occur naturally.” Scientists insert a gene from one organism into another to “improve” or change the organism.
- Refined Sugar Is Bad For You
Starving Cancer to Death by Removing one Food: Refined Sugar. While all of our cells need glucose (a form of sugar which is turned into energy), cancer thrives on a body full of simple carbohydrates (which become sugar in the body) and refined sugars that come from processed foods and overly sweet goodies.
