How does stress make you fat?
American and Australian researchers published a study in the journal Nature Medicine, stating that stress was an important risk factor for weight gain. Indeed, stress stimulates the accumulation of fat, particularly abdominal fat. They gave two groups of mice the same diet, and imposed the mice in the first group in stressful situations (exposure to cold …), while the second group had a normal and comfortable lifestyle. The first group didn’t gain remarkable weight, but when they were exposed to a high-calorie diet, the mice in the first group gained two times more weight than those in the second group.
The researchers noted that in case of stress, the hypothalamus produced a neurotransmitter called Y2 peptide in the fatty tissues of the mice. This promoted proliferation of these tissues and therefore the accumulation of fats.
Indeed, faced with a stressful situation, the body secretes a hormone called cortisol which raises the level of sugar in the blood, weakens the immune system and promotes the accumulation of fat. Indeed, cortisol makes you eat more.

Do not consume caffeine after 6pm:
Caffeine stimulates the production of cortisol. Drinks such as coffee, when consumed at night can affect your sleep, increase your cortisol levels and push you to eat fatty or sugary foods. Or sleep plays a very important role in weight loss. University of California researchers studied the brains of 23 people (MRI), proving that a lack of sleep may promote weight gain. They noted that when people lacked sleep, they tended to move towards high-calorie foods late at night.
Time for yourself:
Do not hesitate to take some time to rest and do nothing. A recent Canadian study showed that people who are constantly exposed to new technologies (smartphones, TVs, computers …) are more stressed than those who take the time to rest and get away from it.
