Although acupuncture, reflexology and massage therapies have long been integral part of Oriental medicine and contribute to the treatment of many health problems such as pain, trauma, stress and diseases, these types of alternative medicines only recently have begun to get a place in Western medicine.
In the same context, the ancient Eastern philosophy about harmonization of the body’s vital energy, called Jin Shin Jyutsu, proved to be highly effective in the treatment of anxiety, depression, inflammation of the sciatic nerve, posttraumatic stress disorder and chronic back pain and neck. Introduced for the first time in the US in the 50s by Mary Burmesiter, who was trained with Jiro Murai, an expert from Japan, this ancient philosophy is gradually gaining popularity.
According to a study, a session of Jin Shin Jyutsu, allows to reduce side effects of cancer treatments. The 159 patients who applied this technique have shown marked improvement with respect to nausea, relief in pain, and stress.
How it works?
Jin Shin Jyutsu requires gently pulling or doing some gentle pressure on each finger for a few minutes to relieve extreme emotional states. The most important is that each finger is connected to a different emotional state:
- The thumb – anxiety, worry
- The index finger – fear
- The middle finger – anger
- The ring finger – sadness, grief, guilt
- Auricular – lack of self esteem or stress: for example, if you are working on a project that you are not sure that you will succeed, touch your ear!
This method is simple and effective, and can be practiced anywhere and at any time, either by adults or children. Moreover, babies and children who suck their thumbs instinctively practice this to calm their worry and anxiety from their contact with the outside world, mysterious and strange enough for them.
So before you begin with this technique, decide on what emotion you will work, and if you have enough free time, you can work on several emotions at once.
Make yourself comfortable, sitting or standing according to your preferences and take the finger gently and corresponding to your emotional state press it gently with the other hand, for 1 to 5 minutes. Concentrate on your breathing; it should be calm and steady. Once you begin to feel the pulse of energy in your finger, you can move on to the next.
You will feel this pulse of energy, at the top or bottom of your finger, like the heartbeat. If you are unable to feel it, do not fear. This does not mean that this method does not work for you but it’s just that you need a little more time to overcome your emotions.
Feel free to practice this technique whenever you need.
